A New Life for Your Heart, Without Major Surgery

What is angioplasty?

Coronary angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to open one or more narrowed or blocked heart arteries responsible for angina or heart attack. The technique involves inserting a small balloon to widen the artery, often followed by the placement of a stent (metal mesh scaffold).

It is a fast and effective alternative to surgical bypass, with shorter recovery time and reduced risk.

Indications for angioplasty

  • Stable or unstable angina
  • Myocardial infarction (emergency or delayed intervention)
  • Coronary narrowing detected on angiography
  • Abnormal stress test or cardiac scintigraphy results
  • Post-transplant patients or history of revascularization

Procedure overview

Principle of angioplasty

1. Puncture through the wrist artery (radial) or groin artery (femoral)
2. Insertion of a catheter guided to the coronary arteries
3. Inflation of a balloon to widen the artery
4. Placement of a stent (metal or drug-eluting) to keep the artery open
5. Removal of equipment and compression of the puncture site

Types of stents used

  • Bare-metal stents
  • Drug-eluting stents: reduce the risk of restenosis
  • Bioresorbable stents: next-generation stents that naturally dissolve

Advanced technology

Our partner centers use the latest innovations in interventional cardiology :

  • Intravascular imaging (OCT, IVUS) for detailed artery visualization
  • Robotic navigation systems for maximum precision
  • Hybrid operating rooms with digital assistance and continuous monitoring
  • Coronary CT scan and 256-slice cardiac CT for non-invasive evaluation

Post-procedure recovery

Hospital stay

  • Usually 24 to 48 hours
  • Continuous cardiac monitoring after the procedure
  • Gradual resumption of walking within a few days

Recommendations

  • Relative rest for a few days
  • Antiplatelet therapy (aspirin + clopidogrel) for 6 to 12 months depending on the stent type
  • Avoid intense physical activity during the first weeks

Follow-up

  • Follow-up electrocardiogram
  • Stress test or follow-up CT scan if needed
  • Post-procedure cardiology consultation included in the package
